Autumn Sage:  Free Polymer Clay Mixing Recipe

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads-up that my garden is overflowing with sage. Can't wait to get my hands on it and start drying it! You know, sage is this incredible flavor booster when it comes to cooking, and let's not forget how awesome it is for cleansing when you burn it. Trust me, you're gonna love it!

Polymer Clay Autumn Sage is mixed using Sculpey Souffle clay (you’ll get similar results using other brands of clay).  It uses Canary (yellow), Robin’s Egg (a lighter blue), Poppy Seed (black) and Igloo (White).  Using Sculpey Premo White or Black in place of the Poppy Seed or Igloo does not change the result.

Prep your Clay

Condition it on the thickest setting of your pasta machine - or the equivalent thickness rolled out with an acrylic (or other) roller.  Five regular playing cards stacked on each side of your rolling space make a thickness about the same as the thickest setting on a pasta machine.  It is essential that each color is rolled to the same thickness.

Cutting the Colors

The basic mixing unit is a 1” square. (If you prefer metric measurements, use 2.5 cm squares).  Use a sturdy ruler with a utility knife or tissue blade.  Carefully cut out two 1” squares of Igloo and one 1” square of Robin’s Egg Blue.

For your Canary clay, you’ll use a piece that measures 1” by ½ inch.  The easiest way to get this is to cut a 1” square and divide it in half.  Use half for making Autumn Sage, and save the other half for another project.

Similarly, with the Poppy Seed (black) clay, you want a piece that measures ½” by ½”.  The easiest way to make this is to start with a 1” square and divide it in half.  Take one of the halves and cut this in half.  This gives you a piece of clay that is one-quarter of the initial 1” square.  Again, save the rest of this clay for another project

Mixing the colors

Roll these five pieces together with your hands:  2 squares of Igloo or White, 1 square of Cornflower Blue, ½ square of Canary, and 1/4 square of Poppy Seed or  Black.

Continue rolling these together, back and forth between your hands.  You are done when you can no longer see any discrete White, Yellow, Cornflower Blue, or Black- the colors are completely mixed together into a new color, Autumn Sage!

Congratulations!  You’ve made a fabulous color!!  Now do something awesome with it.  And then show everyone!  Tag it on Instagram @claycolorrecipes!
